Task 2 week 4

To begin with i believe that filesharing, online downloading of new material has meant that music is more liekly to be consumed through computers and MP3 players than through cd players, etc. I know for sure that whenever i listen to music i listen to it throught the computer, iot is very rare i put a cd in a cd player adn listen to it that way. I would also say that more music is being consumed and more varieties of music, people ar able to branch out more from just the basic chart music that they here on the radio, becaue through word of mouth people say "you should really listen to this song" and you dont have to actually physically buy it in ordeer to listen to it, you can just download and if you dont like it you can just delete it and if you do you casn keep it and dowload more.

A band might make it through a social networking site etc, because of what i talked about in the prevsious post, bands can just add as many people as they like and just spread the word about there band with out spending any money or physically moving from there seat. Also as said above through word of mouth, people can send you url's to myspace pages on bands that are up and coming, again with out paying for it or the hassel of actually having to physically move. Bands like Artic Monkeys, do not like to say that this is how they made it, for reasons i am unsure of, but it is certain that Myspace has definatly helped there cause and spread there muscic even further sround britain and even furtehr than that. This is also a good way for bands becasue they do not have to pay to set up these myspace pages, but they can still be designed in a way that suits the band and a way that suits there personality.

I think that this has already changed the face of popular music. Id say that popular music is alot more diverse these days, the stuff that you here on radio 1 and see on music channels, covers alot more genres, stuff such as indie that would probably not have been classed as mainstream in the past has become alot mroe forefront and i belive this is due to the internet and the way that it does promote new bands and new sounds, to people that may not have even thought about listening to that sort of music before.

i think that we will still need media companies in the future, but they may not come in the same form as they do today, maybe they will go completely online as well, and find way of benefiting from produsers in different ways, so that music still reaches the masses and they still make a profit from them. I think there will always be a place for them but maybe just not in the same way that they are needed to day.

hey, yeah i really agree with the fact that online music has diversified popular music today. Like you said, music genres like indie may have never become well known if it wasn't for online sharing and websites like Myspace showing unknown bands. I think it's really positive for the music industry as more musicians are getting noticed for their music when they might not have had the chance to before.

yeah i agree aswell indie music once wasnt very popular and then all of sudden it was been played all the time probably due to it been listened to by people online. people are more likely to lsiten to it if they can download it for free as if they dont like it it doesnt matter.

yeh, i listen to all my music via computer and stuff i've downloaded or people have sen me, then if i like it i put it on my ipod.

i get annoyed when bands on myspace, etc always post rubbish on your walls and send you stuff, even if it is a band you are interested in.

yeh i think music being available online has made people mroe aware of all the indie sorts of bands and therefore froced a rise in popularity of indie music.

And agreeing with Helen, when some1 says you should listen 2 something but I don't think i'll b interested if i can download it for free I probably will just to see, whereas if I had 2 pay 4 it I wouldn't.

So maybe file sharing and online music has made us more experiemental and willing to listen to new things???

Yeh i agree that My space has helped many bands become well established in the music industry today. The fact that you can easily listen to music at any time then easily tell other people about it means that bands can be known about within weeks. Lauren is right in saying that it is a very positive thing for the musc industry but it does mean that now there are too many bands out there who seem to offer the same thing.

i don't really use myspace so i havn't really experienced bands posting me stuff on my walls i think it would annoy me aswell. Yeah in resoence to aly i no that i have listened to music online that i never normally would as you can download it for free i no i would never have listened to it normally as i wouldn't risk paying for it.

With everybody listening to music online it also must be putting shops like HMV etc out of business as people just don't have the need to buy cd's anymore. I know the only time i would buy a cd is for a present say for my mum to play in the car because i know she wouldn't listen to music all the time on an ipod as she doesn't have one like me.

yeh i would buy a cd as a present if some1 specifically asked for it, but now you can get itunes vouchers and stuff cant you? I bet even that affects CD sales at xmas and times like that.

however, i still usually buy CD's of musicals or sound tracks, I don't know why really, just always like to have the proper version of it.

Kayleigh, I find your comments very interesting on music sharing. This is a subject which I have a huge interest in. I like the points you make about this opening up different types of music to people, and this seems to be a positive aspect. I also think you have given a good considered response to the benefits music sharing could have for the band...I had previously thought music-sharing may be quite detrimental if people aren't going out to buy their CDs, but I guess they are going to reach a greater audience and market themselves with little cost. However, there is still the fact that many groups just don't seem to stay as prominent in the charts as groups used to in the past....do you think that on-line music sharing has contributed to this? I'm clearly somewhat out-of-touch, and don't own an ipod, or download tunes...I personally like to own the hard-copy of the discs and have the proper cases.

All the best

Emma

i think online ahring has contributed to groups not staying around as long because there's always new things arising from the internet and therefore (because we can) we can listen to a new genre of music like every week!
